Chapter Twenty-Six

Oni and I hurried down the path now lined with spirits of every kind. I didn’t want to get too close to the Incubus. It was like a mass of pulsating blackness that glistened and sparkled like cancer if cancer could thrive outside of a body. It was helping us, and yet I couldn’t fight the revulsion I felt at the sight of it. But I didn’t have to worry about it getting too close to me. It was setting a nice pace, and Oni’s form was a buffer between us.

As the Incubus pushed forward, it reformed the path, clearing it of any entity that tried to block our way, bowling into them and sending even the biggest of the devil dogs flying through the air.

Sometimes a formless smoke spirit tried to flow between us, darting mere inches from our faces, but I stopped trying to avoid running into them and kept up with Oni and the Incubus.

Then I realized they wouldn’t touch me. If I barreled forward, they made sure to get out of my way. That was curious.

The Incubus began to increase its speed until I was jogging and then running. I was winded, breathing in grit, and my eyes watered and stung. I was just about to call for a break when the Incubus suddenly stopped.

Oni slowed. Here is where you cross. Flash yourself back home, and then you can call for me.

I barely let her finish before I was pulling on my connection back to the beach. Just like before, the trip felt different. I could sense there were things that were aware of me, that could possibly even reach out and take me, but I ignored them and focused because I didn’t know if even thinking about what was out there was enough to lead me off the path.

I re-emerged in Ran’s kitchen. Alexis and Ran had obviously sensed my arrival because Alexis hurried from the living room toward me. In the moments before I materialized I had seen the worry on his face and the way he paced anxiously.

Ran looked worn out and was sitting on his couch with his head buried in his hands.

“Kim!” Alexis grabbed me. His eyes were frantic. “Are you hurt?”

I shook my head. “I’m okay.”

Ran was at my side. “Where’s Oni?”

Shit, Of course he had been worried about Oni. She was his companion.

“I have to summon her.” I called for her knowing that it might take a few moments for her to materialize.

Alexis placed his hands on my stomach. “Is the baby okay?”

I nodded. “He’s fine, Alexis. We’re all fine. I have so much to tell you.” We had to come up with a new plan because the Werewolves were now the least of our concerns. There was a chance that we could overthrow the powers in charge of the Neratomay!

His eyes met mine again, but Oni arrived before he could speak.

Ran pulled her into his arms and hugged her. “Oni…” he moaned. “I thought you were gone.”

“I am here,” she replied while they held each other.
